Must-Visit Businesses in St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands
Our go-to Markets
A successful vacation always starts with the right supplies. If you've ever been stuck without a good cup of coffee to start your day or realized you forgot the sunscreen while already on the beach, you know that quality preparation is everything. It is important to have some knowledge about the shops in the area so when you realized you forgot the sunscreen, you know where to go. We’ve seen plenty of markets open and close over the last 48 years, but these are the tride and true ones we trust most.
Moe’s Fresh Market Located directly across the street from our IYC base in Red Hook, Moe’s is an island classic. Moe’s is known for providing a good mix of local staples and more gourmet imports. You can expect to find an impressive array of fresh produce, much of it sourced from local farmers when in season. Their deli and butcher counter are top-notch and offer custom cuts of meat and prepared salads that are perfect for a quick lunch. Their selection doesn’t stop there, Moe’s offers a wide selection of wines in their cellar. It features everything from everyday chilled rosés to impressive vintages that pair perfectly with a sunset dinner.
Fruit Bowl If you find yourself near Wheatley Center, a stop at the Fruit Bowl is a tradition for many residents. This business has specialized in the freshest fruits and vegetables available on the island for over four decades. It is the best place to find those hard-to-get specialty items, fresh herbs, and international spices that can turn any meal into a five-star experience.
Our Favorite Spots for a Drink and a Bite
The USVI has everything from "shacks" where you can eat with your feet in the sand to some pretty sophisticated waterfront spots. These are the places that never go out of style.
Duffy’s Love Shack It would be a disservice to talk about Red Hook without mentioning Duffy’s. Billing itself as the "world-famous parking lot bar," Duffy's is a vibrant, fun-loving spot that captures the true spirit of island life. It is the perfect place to grab a quick bite and a good tropical drinks. These drinks are served in anything from a coconut to a souvenir mug. The atmosphere is always welcoming and the vibes are high. It is a great spot to swap stories with fellow sailors.
The Easterly For those looking for a more refined experience in Red Hook, The Easterly is a breath of fresh air. The restaurant features a stunning open-air design that feels both modern and deeply rooted in the Caribbean. Their menu focuses on wood-fired seafood and craft cocktails infused with local flavors. We highly recommend the wood-roasted whole fish. It is a true celebration of the bounty our waters provide.
Dinghy’s Beach Bar & Grill (Water Island) A short hop from St. Thomas brings you to Honeymoon Beach on Water Island. Dinghy’s is the epitome of a Caribbean beach bar. With tables right in the sand and a dinghy dock for easy access, it is a favorite stop for our guests. The vibe is laid-back. The fish tacos are excellent. Their "smoothie" drinks are dangerously good. It is the kind of place where an hour-long lunch easily turns into an entire afternoon of relaxation, they offer full-service lounge chairs and umbrellas. You can settle in, soak up the sun, and let their dedicated staff bring you refreshing beverages and snacks while you enjoy the day your way. For those seeking a touch of luxury, you can even rent a private cabana or opt for bottle service to elevate the afternoon.
For the adventure seekers, Dinghy’s is a hub for water sports. You can explore the crystal-clear waters with their rental paddleboards and kayaks, or dive into the mesmerizing underwater world with top-quality snorkel gear. If you prefer to stay on land, they have well-maintained courts for beach tennis and volleyball, and they even provide the equipment. Whether it is a friendly game of beach football or soccer with friends and family, there are endless ways to make memories in the sand. Before you leave, be sure to stop by their retail gift shop to find a memento of your time, from local crafts to beachwear.
Shopping and Culture at Mongoose Junction (St. John)
While our base is in St. Thomas, a lot of guests spend significant time exploring St. John. When you drop a mooring in Cruz Bay, a walk up to Mongoose Junction is a mandatory part of the experience. This beautiful complex was hand-built using local stone and coral. It blends perfectly into the tropical landscape.
Bamboula If you are looking for a souvenir that isn't a generic t-shirt, Bamboula is the place to go. They specialize in "primitive" art, unique clothing, and home decor sourced from the Caribbean and beyond.
