Introduction

The U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) are renowned for their breathtaking coastline and pristine beaches that attract visitors worldwide. Ideally suited for cruising, these islands offer diverse beach settings, from secluded coves to lively beach bars, ensuring an unforgettable experience for every traveler. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or family fun, the USVI's beaches cater to all preferences. With the warm Caribbean sun and gentle trade winds as your companions, you can paddle through serene waters, explore vibrant coral reefs, or bask in the sun on a soft sandy beach. In this guide, we’ll explore the top beaches in the USVI that you can easily access by yacht, making them ideal stops for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling during your sailing adventure.

1. Leinster Bay & Waterlemon Cay, St. John:

Regarded as one of the most beautiful & secluded anchorages in St. John’s National Park, Leinster Bay is a must-visit for the sailing cruiser. This stunning location offers crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and the snorkeling is exceptional. Waterlemon Cay is the home of many island coral species as well as a variety of tropical fish as well as the home of many star fish. Accessibility by boat is excellent with over 20 National Park Moorings available.  The views from your cockpit are breathtaking, as you experience the pristine, undeveloped beauty of the St. John’s northside mountains that meet the azure sea. Leinster Bay is home to Annaberg Sugar Plantation ruins, one of the best preserved historical sites in the US Virgin Islands and a short and easy hike from the anchorage.

2. Magen’s Bay, St. Thomas:

Magens Bay is a beautiful anchorage off St.Thomas’s north side, and was voted by National Geographic as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in the world! With its sweeping turquoise bay facing the Atlantic ocean, and its mile long white sand beach, it’s ideal for families and beachgoers. Magens Bay features a designated anchorage for yachtsmen, on the Northeast shore, with a designated dinghy channel to visit ashore and to drop your guests on the beach. The beach is also popular for water sports, including kayaking and paddleboarding, allowing for a fun-filled day of activities. You’ll find plenty of amenities too, including restrooms, showers, a bar, and a restaurant/snack bar. Magen’s Bay has the best pizza on St. Thomas, according to Andrea King, owner of IYC.

3. Cinnamon Bay, St. John:

Cinnamon Bay is a family-friendly beach that offers a mix of fun activities and natural beauty. The waters here are calm, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. At Cinnamon you can rent a National Park mooring for the night.  Rental kayaks & stand-up paddleboards are also available on the beach. This beach is also located within Virgin Islands National Park, providing easy access to hiking trails that lead to historic sugar mill ruins and scenic viewpoints. With ample space to spread out, it’s an ideal beach for picnicking, exploring, and enjoying a laid-back day in the sun. The beach is also home to Cinnamon Bay Campground, where visitors can enjoy unique accommodations, from tents to luxury safari-style cabins. Guided eco-tours and cultural activities, such as traditional cooking classes, are often available.

4. Salt Pond Bay, St. John:

For those seeking a quieter, more secluded experience, Salt Pond Bay off St. John’s remote southeast end of the island,is the perfect option. This stunning white sand beach features renowned snorkeling as well as two fantastic hikes, to Drunk Bay and Rams Head. The calm waters provide excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. Hawksnest is known for its excellent snorkeling opportunities, with a variety of marine life visible just off the shore. The beach and trails are also a great spot for nature photography, especially with the beautiful backdrop of the surrounding pristine hills and trees. There are plenty of shaded areas for families looking to relax, and nearby trails provide access to scenic viewpoints. This is a National Park anchorage with moorings available for rent from the park. Note: Salt Pond is a smaller bay with fewer moorings, so it’s best to arrive by midday to ensure availability.

6. Honeymoon Beach, Water Island

Accessible only by small ferry to the island or by private yacht, Honeymoon Beach is a tranquil paradise off Water Island’s southside, offering the cruising sailor a serene escape. The beach features soft white sand and clear waters, perfect for leisurely swimming and snorkeling, as well as food options and a beach bar. Families can enjoy a relaxing day under the sun, as well as refreshments and snacks. This peaceful setting is perfect for unwinding and enjoying nature's beauty. Visitors can also walk the quiet island roads to get a glimpse of the amazing scenic overlooks of the surrounding Caribbean Sea.

Buck Island St. Croix:

Buck Island is part of the US National Park preserve. Located off St. Croix’s North side, it is an approximately 6 hour reach from St. John’s east end, and well worth the trip for the adventurous sailor who is looking for a blue water experience. Buck Island offers anchoring by permit in advance, so please inquire with IYC on the process. The island’s snorkeling is some of the best in the world. You are bound to see all species of tropical fish and coral, while spending the night in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Take a mooring at St. Croix Marine and dine ashore in some of the best restaurants in the Virgin Islands, on historic Company Street. If you love history, consider renting a car and visit the historic sites that include the beautifully preserved Fort Christianvearn, the home of Alexander Hamilton and the Whim Great House.
